Best Recovery Drink - Coconut Water
Exercise – especially intense endurance exercise – imposes unique hydration demands. There is ample evidence that dehydration and electrolyte loss impairs performance, sometimes causing serious health problems. Even modest fluid loss (under 2% of total body water) can impair performance if it happens rapidly and is accelerated in hot weather.
Exercise demands that the body cope with simultaneous demands for cardiovascular equilibrium, temperature control and muscle energy. When the body is not well hydrated, as is often the case with athletes, performance and overall health can be compromised. At its extreme, exercise-induced water loss can lead to failure to dissipate heat, circulatory collapse and death.
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) advises athletes to drink about 500 ml (17 ounces) of fluid two hours prior to exercise and at regular intervals during exercise. In essence, athletes should drink as much as they can reasonably tolerate. For activities lasting more than one hour, the drink should contain carbohydrates and electrolytes.
Because of its central role in muscle function, magnesium is particularly susceptible to depletion during endurance sports, made worse for athletes on calorie-restricted diets that may be lacking in nutrients. Commercially available sports drinks, while formulated for optimal mineral, electrolyte and carbohydrate delivery, are often loaded with questionable colorings, flavorings and other potentially unhealthy additives.
So-called “energy drinks” are poor choices for rehydration.
The amount required for good hydration would contain excessive, even dangerous levels of sugar, caffeine or other stimulants. Sports/exercise specialists are divided on the effects of caffeine: there is some evidence it can improve performance in some endurance athletes but response is highly variable. Keep in mind that it is a diuretic, so caffeine drinkers need to pay even closer attention to hydration.
